- <p> DIED. TOM EWELL, 85, actor; in Woodland Hills, California. By
- the time Ewell made his first screen splash, as the square philanderer
- shot by Judy Holliday in Adam's Rib (1949), he was a stage veteran
- seasoned by years of mostly flops and occasional hits like John
- Loves Mary (400 performances). Among his other film work: Up
- Front (1951), playing Willie, cartoonist Bill Mauldin's immortal
- G.I. dogface; and the role that secured him a place in film
- history, the conscience-stricken "summer bachelor" of The Seven
- Year Itch (1955) who crosses libidos with Marilyn Monroe (and
- has the good fortune to be at her side when a blast of air tosses
- her skirts skyward). TV work included a single season of The
- Tom Ewell Show, a sitcom, in 1960, and years later, he was Robert
- Blake's crusty sidekick in Baretta.
